2013: A Year of Progress and Development – TIM GILDING MARINE DESIGN

2013: A Year of Progress and Development

2013: A Year of Progress and Development.

As another year comes to yet another abrupt end, it seems a good time to reflect on this current year, analyzing the progressions and developments that have occurred at TGMD in the past twelve months.

A Year of Ups and Downs:
Watching a number of prolific marine companies falter and disappear is an intimidating experience, and often plays on the minds of us here at TGMD as we strive to build a business from the ground up. With so many companies with rich heritage and seemingly endless order books struggling, one really has to ask themselves: is this really worth it? All the effort and the time, will it pay off in the end?

The answer, by any and all means, is yes. This is what we love to do. This is a passion, and if we weren’t doing this. we would be plodding along in something else, not ever truly enjoying our day-to-day. As Confucious once said:
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
A Year of Progress:
Early March saw the initial release of the 30m sailing yacht, Project Immersion. Very quickly, we received a large amount of of very positive interest from around the globe; from product manufacturers, to boat builders, to prospective buyers, and to industry analysts. Development on this project continues, with a more toned-down variant of the original concept in development for a northern European company, which should be revealed in the new year.

Varying projects have been developing this year, with the latest being released just prior to Christmas – an 8m dayboat, Project Barrel-Back.

The long-term contract with a local project for the rebuild of a 65m classic motoryacht is nearing an end. It has been a worthwhile and highly rewarding experience and one that I personally am very greatful to have been a part of. The opportunity to be a part of a high-profile restoration project for a high-profile client is a rare one, and one that should never be taken for granted. I have made some great friends and met some incredibly talented and passionate people on the project over the past two years – watching her touch the water for the first time in four years will be an emotional time.

A Year of International Travel:
Following on leads generated by the interest in Project Immersion, TGMD travelled to Germany to meet with some European boat builders and speak of potential future deals. A trip to New Zealand to visit previous employers and new and flourishing companies in the middle of the year also yielded some fascinating prospects and exciting work opportunities.

A Year of Promise:
And so as this year comes to a close, it is time to look to the future. And here at TGMD the future is bright. We are looking at relocating to the sailing hub of Lymington, and also into opening a fully functional design studio. Moving out of the home-studio will be an exciting development indeed!

Stay tuned. 2014 will be bigger and better!
